Dr. Roberto S. Miranda, the beloved Senior Pastor of the Congregation Lion of Judah for nearly 40 years, passed away suddenly on Saturday evening, May 21. He was accompanied by his wife of 38 years, Mercedes (“Meche”) Lopez-Miranda when Pastor Roberto went on to be with the Lord.
We covet your prayers for Pastora Meche; for their daughters, Sonia and Abigail; for their grandchildren, Caleb, Eliza, and Daniella; and for Pastor Roberto’s sisters and brothers. We also ask that you pray for the Congregación León de Judá, this beautiful church family into which Pastor Roberto poured his life, and must now set out on the future God has for us without him.

Dr. Roberto Miranda Bio
Rev. Dr. Roberto Miranda served as Senior Pastor of Congregación León de Judá (CLJ) from 1984 to 2022. He was born in 1955 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he spent his childhood until moving to New York at the age of 10. He received his B.A. from Princeton University, where he graduated as a Woodrow Wilson Scholar in 1978 with a degree in International Relations. In 1989, he completed a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literature from Harvard University.
During his studies at Harvard, Dr. Miranda helped to found CLJ, a predominantly Latino church in Boston’s Roxbury/South End. Today, León de Judá is one of Boston’s largest churches, widely known for its diverse composition and social ministries that impact the city’s youth and immigrant families.
Dr. Miranda was active in fostering unity and spiritual revival in churches from all denominations across the New England area. He founded Covenant for New England, a multi-denominational organization that brings together various religious ministries for spiritual renewal, as well as the Fellowship of Latino Pastors of New England (COPAHNI), an organization serving over 70 Latino churches from different denominations across the region. Throughout his years of ministry, he preached in many countries around North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
In 2013, he received an honorary doctorate (D. Min.) from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. Between 2009 and 2022, he published 3 books, En la tierra de los peregrinos, Pies de barro, and most recently Vida por diseño, which will be released posthumously this June.
Dr. Miranda is survived by his wife of 39 years and partner in ministry, Mercedes López-Miranda, their daughters, Sonia and Abigail, two sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. He was an unconditionally devoted husband, father, and grandfather and left an indelible mark on the countless people whose lives he touched.
