"When the manna ceases."

January 28, 2017 9AM Message, "When the manna ceases."

the path you might never watch I never

00:21

watched football I couldn't tell you a

00:23

football from a baseball or from a

00:25

basketball but that's my sin and that's

00:28

my omission

00:29

I don't consider that a virtue at all

00:31

but yeah I'm sure there's a lot of

00:33

excitement in the air if we could only

00:35

put that excitement into the kingdom

00:36

forget it man we would be all right

00:38

that's the pastor in me not able to

00:40

suppress that little comment Joshua

00:42

chapter 5 verses 10 to 12 you know I've

00:46

been struggling with the desire and the

00:48

carnal intention to just finish this

00:50

series and I say carnal because you know

00:53

that's in me the human part says okay

00:54

you know I just really wanted to preach

00:56

one sermon one meditation on this idea

01:00

of being going into a place where we

01:02

have never been before but you know the

01:04

Lord has held me to this passage and to

01:08

this particular episode in the life of

01:11

the people of Israel crossing over into

01:14

the promised land and I don't feel the

01:18

freedom yet to finish with this

01:22

meditation but somehow the Lord keeps

01:24

drinking other components into my spirit

01:26

that I think are very important and I

01:30

believe that this is important because

01:31

I'm not just preaching a text or a

01:33

passage I'm not choosing things you know

01:36

in a haphazard sort of way

01:37

I believe I'm really preaching these

01:39

sermons in a prophetic kind of a

01:41

modality and stance I think that I'm

01:45

declaring things and I'm doing it by

01:47

sheer obedience as I did on the first

01:50

one because this idea of you you're you

01:54

have never passed this way before was

01:56

simply a very crude impression that I

01:59

had in my mind and I didn't really know

02:01

where the road was taking me and simply

02:02

in obedience I started kind of you know

02:04

decoding and breaking down that

02:06

impression and it kind of unfolded

02:09

before me slowly and I realized that the

02:12

Lord was speaking something in a very

02:13

deliberate sort of way so I am preaching

02:16

in a sense out of sheer obedience with

02:19

fear and trembling because I'm saying

02:21

things that are a little threatening to

02:23

me who I'm always seeking security and

02:25

you know not saying anything that may

02:27

not be in the real authority of the Lord

02:29

but I believe that this is of God and

02:31

God has been speaking to us

02:32

and and this this idea of Israel

02:35

crossing into the Promised Land is a is

02:37

a paradigm that has been with us for

02:39

many many years and I told you that 20

02:41

years ago we as a congregation living in

02:43

Cambridge we have been given this

02:45

beautiful building for free

02:47

lovely lovely temple in Cambridge Port

02:50

Putnam Avenue and Magazine Street

02:53

I say that's firmly implanted in my

02:55

brain that corner right there how many

02:57

times I said it and you know that

03:00

beautiful building was given to us in

03:02

the Lord really you know he was so

03:04

condescending and so loving to us he we

03:08

were a very small group of people

03:10

emigrating from the Immanuel gospel

03:12

Center we had been given a space to

03:14

begin our congregation six months later

03:15

we have we are given a beautiful

03:17

building with all kinds of facilities

03:20

and so on and so forth and we were there

03:22

for from 90 from 82 to 98 actually when

03:27

we moved in here so it's about 15 years

03:29

more or less and you know the Lord was I

03:32

say condescending and and just gracious

03:34

with us because I say it's very easy

03:36

fledgling small congregation we're not

03:39

able to sustain a big building by

03:40

ourselves or to buy it or constructed or

03:43

rehab it and the Lord just gave it to us

03:45

for free

03:47

and we were there for 15 years and and

03:50

you know that place is like a womb for

03:52

us where we gained momentum and maturity

03:57

and there were 15 years of relative

04:00

carefree existence in terms of finances

04:03

for small group because we had

04:05

everything pretty much the facility was

04:07

paid for and there was nothing there

04:09

that we needed to do except maintenance

04:10

and so on and you know I think when we

04:13

were ready the Lord then moved us here

04:16

to Boston and we saw the crossing over

04:20

from Cambridge to Boston across the

04:24

Charles River because we had to cross

04:25

that as a kind of a paradigm for us of

04:27

crossing into maturity into greater

04:30

depth and really then having to fend for

04:34

ourselves support ourselves more clearly

04:37

and doing all kinds of things that we

04:38

would have never dreamed possible and so

04:40

here we have been since 98 97

04:46

and you know we have been existing in a

04:50

very good way with a greater sense of

04:52

maturity as a congregation greater

04:53

commitments greater obligations as well

04:57

but you know I feel that now we are in a

05:00

time where there's another crossing over

05:03

that the Lord is preparing for us as a

05:06

congregation there is another step into

05:08

a greater level of maturity and a

05:10

greater level of deliberateness and

05:13

obligation and seriousness as well so we

05:18

are I think being called by the Lord to

05:19

cross a Jordan so to speak in a more

05:24

serious fashion and this is not a Jordan

05:28

that is physical let us say Jordan that

05:29

is spiritual it is a barrier it is a

05:31

virtual entering into another dimension

05:35

of life as a congregation and I have

05:39

been waiting for such a time all my life

05:42

really and I have always seen our

05:44

travailing and working and all the

05:47

things that we do here is mere

05:48

scaffolding and mere rehearsal for

05:51

something more substantial that the Lord

05:54

has for us and I live for that time

05:55

really I all I do in a sense lacks a

05:59

certain level of seriousness and gravity

06:01

because I are fixed on something else

06:04

something that is out there that I

06:07

believe the Lord has in store for us and

06:10

I and I really I live for that and and I

06:13

just feel that the Lord is speaking and

06:14

saying you are you are entering into

06:16

that now I I have a sense of immediacy

06:19

about that but it may be you know

06:22

sometimes God's immediate is a lot is

06:24

lot longer than our immediate you know

06:28

the Bible has been saying Jesus is

06:29

coming soon for 2,000 years and I don't

06:31

want to draw kind of a defense around

06:33

that I want to escape the idea of trying

06:35

to build a safe zone for retreat for

06:36

myself all I'm saying is that sometimes

06:38

God takes what seems to was a matter of

06:40

two or three days maybe two or three

06:41

months for God or two or three years but

06:43

I know that there is a something about

06:45

an imminent breakthrough that God is

06:49

preparing us for and that it is linked

06:51

to this paradigm that the Bible

06:56

establishes through the journey of the

06:59

Israelites and

07:00

desert and they're crossing over into

07:01

Jordan and all their struggles because

07:03

really you know ultimately these events

07:06

in the Old Testament are not meant to

07:07

just kind of register a historical event

07:10

and oh yeah God did these things and

07:12

great you know a wonderful let's

07:14

celebrate

07:14

they're meant to kind of format our

07:19

minds as to the way that God deals with

07:21

his people we are supposed to glean

07:25

certain spiritual principles out of

07:28

those events and live our life according

07:31

to them these things were written not

07:34

for you know just scholarly registry but

07:40

for life and the conduct and these

07:44

events are supposed to be read as

07:46

prototypes and paradigms for the life of

07:49

the church this is why an aside here I

07:52

think that we we cannot dispense with

07:55

the Old Testament I think there's a lot

07:57

of tendency in evangelicalism in America

08:01

in other parts of more modern parts of

08:03

evangelicalism to kind of you know see

08:07

this that the Old Testament is a

08:08

second-rate part of the Bible and to be

08:13

inclined to just kind of value more the

08:15

the New Testament because the Old

08:17

Testament has also has so many

08:18

disturbing actions of God so many things

08:22

that are you know kind of offensive to

08:25

our tender modern sensibility and yet I

08:29

I rebuke that and I I reject that

08:32

completely the Old Testament is as much

08:33

a part of the Bible as the New Testament

08:35

amen now some of us say that pro forma

08:38

just because it sounds nice but in our

08:40

hearts we don't necessarily completely

08:43

appropriate ourselves of that fact I

08:45

think the Old Testament is as much a

08:48

dependable solid foundation even the

08:52

horrible things that are in it like you

08:56

know eliminating all the pagan tribes

08:58

wherever the the Israelites went somehow

09:01

a part of our sensibility rejects that

09:03

mentally we reject it and we say no God

09:06

doesn't work that way God does an

09:08

ordered genocide even the word genocide

09:10

of course is so laden with modern

09:13

implications the Holocaust and Armenian

09:16

Genocide and so on and so forth that the

09:18

idea of God somehow participating or

09:20

initiating the extermination of an

09:23

entire tribe or peoples as it did in

09:26

Jericho for example in other parts

09:28

that's so totally offensive to us so

09:30

we've developed these defense mechanisms

09:32

in our psyche and we have

09:34

compartmentalized whole aspects of the

09:36

Bible and we have tried to kind of you

09:39

know cause Metis eyes them and kind of

09:43

diminish their harshness and what we are

09:47

doing really is offending the Holy

09:49

Spirit when we do that you know the

09:51

Bible speaks to me clearly disturbingly

09:54

offensively scandalously and all I can

09:58

do is simply bow before it's mystery I

10:01

will never try to diminish its impact

10:04

and God is a very mysterious God he

10:07

doesn't adhere to our very simplistic

10:10

ways of looking at goodness and justice

10:12

and kindness and love God's love is a

10:15

very very scary terrifying thing at

10:18

times and so I'm just saying that kind

10:20

of apologetically not apologizing but

10:22

apologetically to defend the

10:25

applicability of these concepts that we

10:27

have in the Old Testament and it's

10:29

applicability for our time for the

10:31

church the Christian loving church that

10:35

we are supposed to be and so these these

10:40

paradigms that we see in the Old

10:42

Testament particularly in the crossing

10:43

over and in the living the the whole

10:46

thing of the desert and what God did in

10:48

the desert and so on if you read the

10:51

book of Hebrews for example or other

10:53

passages in Scripture scripture clearly

10:55

sees these events like the Passover as a

10:58

whole prototype for things that we're

11:00

going to be fulfilled in Jesus Christ

11:02

and so many other things that we see in

11:04

the Old Testament are simply you know

11:07

God's psyche kind of expressing things

11:11

in a graphic metaphorical sort of way

11:13

for our benefit and so yes and it's true

11:17

that historically the Israelites

11:19

experienced these things but spiritually

11:22

the principles that they unleashed in

11:25

living out this drama that God was calm

11:27

achtung are applicable for all existence

11:30

and for the entire time for the churches

11:32

on earth am I making sense here alright

11:34

and I know that might sound a little

11:36

challenging to you but it is a true so

11:38

again I am simply establishing a frame

11:43

of reference here for what I'm gonna say

11:44

so let me get into that now there's a

11:48

passage in a chapter 5 of Joshua verses

11:52

9 through 12 let me read it quickly it's

11:55

it's it's after you know the Israelites

11:57

are ready to cross the Jordan they're

11:59

ready to enter into Jericho which I

12:01

discussed a bit I think it was last week

12:03

and all the week before now I don't know

12:07

it's just one big haze one big prophetic

12:12

gay haze but um here's here's the story

12:14

I spoke about Jericho last time but I

12:16

want to go back a little bit as I say

12:18

you know the Lord kind of keeps me

12:19

tethered to certain things

12:21

chapter 5 Joshua now you know they have

12:25

they have celebrated circumcircle in on

12:28

themselves they have also celebrated the

12:30

Passover and there's stuff there there's

12:32

meat there as well but then it says in

12:34

verse 9 after they have celebrated the

12:36

Passover then the Lord said to Joshua 5

12:40

9 today important word today I have

12:48

rolled away the reproach of Egypt from

12:53

you I mean 40 years after they left

12:55

Egypt I am rolling away the reproach of

12:59

Egypt in other words something was

13:01

happening by that the human humiliation

13:05

and the poverty in which the Israelites

13:08

were existing in Egypt but which had not

13:11

been removed from them ultimately even

13:13

when they were freed from Egypt and

13:15

we're in the desert why because there

13:16

were a rebellious people because they

13:18

offended the Lord because those 40 years

13:20

of their spent in the desert were not

13:22

meant to be by the Lord but the

13:24

Israelites in their rebellious nests

13:29

brought about upon themselves that kind

13:32

of condemnation from God so a reproach a

13:36

state of humiliation that they were

13:38

supposed to have already superseded

13:40

many years ago was still upon them and

13:42

they were still living in a kind of

13:45

limbo spiritually there were God's

13:49

people but not completely in a way and

13:52

remember they had not all that whole

13:53

generation the new generation that had

13:55

left Egypt the new generation of the

13:57

those who were born the desert had not

13:58

been circumcised in a sense they were

14:01

uncircumcised to people they had not

14:03

celebrated the new covered the covenant

14:05

with God so they're in a kind of a limbo

14:08

state spiritually so this is why God

14:10

tells them today today you are entering

14:14

into a new spiritual state now now I'm

14:16

dealing with you as members of my tribe

14:20

my family

14:21

today I have rolled away I have removed

14:24

the reproach the humiliation of Egypt

14:27

from you so the place has been called

14:30

gilga to this day Yoga apparently in

14:34

Hebrew the original Hebrew has this

14:36

connotation of rolling rolling away

14:40

now it says here's I'm entering now into

14:43

the punchline here on the evening of the

14:44

14th day of the month while camp that

14:47

hill governed the plains of Jericho the

14:48

Israelites celebrated the Passover so

14:50

yes in other words in celebrating the

14:51

Passover may I may have made a mistake

14:53

here they are having that reproach

14:55

rolled away and I will get back to that

14:57

at some point this idea of the Passover

14:59

and there's there's an element here in

15:00

circumcision in preparation for the

15:02

coming time so today I'm said today I'd

15:06

like you're saying I am rolling away as

15:10

you celebrate the Passover the reproach

15:13

of Egypt and it says in verse 11 the day

15:15

after the Passover that very day okay

15:19

after they have celebrated the Passover

15:21

after they have been circumcised

15:24

something has been completed something

15:28

has been released something has been

15:31

defined and finalized the day after the

15:36

Passover that very day here's what

15:39

happens they ate some of the produce of

15:43

the land unleavened bread and roasted

15:48

grain right after that they eat for the

15:52

first time I mean there may have been

15:53

little more

15:54

you know the the scholars are not in

15:57

total agreement with that because again

15:59

the Bible makes a you know an

16:02

encompassing statement sometimes doesn't

16:04

get into all the little details but that

16:06

day they ate for the first time I said

16:08

congregation as a people as a group as a

16:10

as a nation some of the produce of the

16:13

land on leavened bread and roasted grain

16:15

so here's my this is really the the

16:17

thing that has kept me this week

16:19

disturbed and I wanting to find out what

16:23

does that mean for us and what does that

16:24

mean for the people of God as a whole

16:27

because I think that some of these

16:28

things are applicable to the entire

16:29

Church of Jesus Christ in this time of

16:32

history that is beginning to open up for

16:34

the church with a capital C and for our

16:37

congregation they ate for the first time

16:41

of this food of the promised land the

16:44

manna stopped the day after they ate

16:48

this food from the land

16:51

interestingly enough the sort of speak

16:55

the keulen Airy routine that they had

16:57

lived for 40 years all of a sudden comes

16:59

to an end this manna that they had been

17:02

eating unfailingly and that had been

17:06

descending upon the land wherever they

17:08

walked all of a sudden miraculously

17:11

stops there's an order from heaven

17:14

no more manna there was no longer any

17:19

manna for the Israelites but that year

17:23

they ate of the produce of Canaan now

17:27

you know that image stayed with me it

17:30

struck me the day that they start eating

17:34

of the food of the land that God has

17:36

given them the land that had been

17:40

promised to them the land that now

17:43

defines truly their status as a people

17:46

as a nation they're entering into their

17:51

own entering into maturity entering into

17:54

the realization the realization of

17:56

everything that they have been promised

17:57

and that they have been expecting of

17:59

this process that was initiated 400 plus

18:02

years before by their father Abraham

18:04

when God said leave your people

18:07

and your family in the family that the

18:09

land that is familiar to you and start

18:10

marking out the land that I will give to

18:15

my people and then after Abraham comes

18:18

all the other stuff Joseph in Egypt the

18:21

the the Joseph family coming into Egypt

18:23

staying there for 300 plus years and

18:26

then finally the Lord taking them out

18:28

with a strong hand and his outstretched

18:31

arm as the Bible says a drama was

18:34

released for them to process their land

18:36

for forty years they roamed the desert

18:38

and finally hundreds of years of process

18:42

are coming to a culmination and as soon

18:46

as they enter the land and start eating

18:47

off the wheat and the vegetables of that

18:53

land boom something stops and now the

18:58

Lord says okay now you're in a new

19:00

dispensation now you're in a new era no

19:04

more mana for you now you're gonna be

19:07

eating real food

19:10

so you mana it's a very specific thing

19:18

in the history of Israel I looked up you

19:20

know a little bit about it and we know

19:22

about it but here let me read something

19:24

briefly that I found in the internet for

19:26

you

19:26

what is mana mana looked like coriander

19:29

seed to very it was a tiny little thing

19:33

you know that God gave his people to eat

19:37

and tasted like wafers made with honey

19:40

that's what the Bible says uh you know

19:43

you probably have you know it's like a

19:45

cracker of some sort with a little bit

19:47

of sweetness in it right

19:50

wafers made with honey when the

19:52

Israelites saw it they asked each other

19:56

what the heck is this what is this you

19:59

know forgive me am i the right

20:00

trespassin

20:02

what is this and when they said what is

20:06

this that's where the word manna come

20:09

from like what so it's a strange

20:13

manifestation of God you know this you

20:16

know it's not me it's not cereal it's

20:18

not milk it's not free

20:20

it's what is it it's some some substance

20:23

that I I happen to believe that it was

20:25

like a basic substance that they could

20:28

make all kinds of things out of you know

20:30

they could make a dessert they could

20:31

make a meal they could make bread it was

20:34

like a primal substance so when they saw

20:38

it they said what is it and this led to

20:41

the name manna what I'm continuing to

20:45

read it came each morning except on the

20:47

Sabbath day on the Sabbath day on the

20:49

seventh day of the week they would not

20:52

descend it could be collected each day

20:56

for that day alone I mean God in his

20:59

extreme capacity to teach objectively

21:03

had developed manna as a way of forcing

21:05

the Israelites to depend on him alone so

21:08

for forty days they can only they manna

21:10

could not be stored he had to be picked

21:12

every day and they had to every day

21:14

rehearse their total dependency on the

21:16

God would provide for them and could be

21:18

collected each day for that day alone

21:20

and only as much as could be eaten in

21:21

one day

21:22

if a person tried to collect more than

21:25

needed or to store the manna for future

21:28

needs it would grow wormy and foul in

21:33

other words didn't taste good or smell

21:34

good in this way it was impossible for

21:37

the Israelites to avoid total dependence

21:40

on God or to use the manna greedily for

21:43

personal gain miraculously the manna

21:46

could be preserved on the sixth day and

21:48

eaten on the Sabbath and it was not to

21:50

be found on the Sabbath morning

21:54

eventually the rebellious Israelites

21:56

grew tired of the manna this is

21:58

important because some people think that

22:00

you know in taking away the manna God

22:02

was sort of destiny the Israelites now

22:05

to a kind of an inferior existence more

22:08

dependent on just generic manifestations

22:10

of God's grace but it was the opposite

22:12

it was the other way around for the

22:13

Israelites you know eating manna every

22:15

day was not the best thing in the world

22:19

so the Israelites grew rebellious and

22:23

tired of the manna and regretted the day

22:25

they were delivered from their bondage

22:27

in numbers eleven six they started

22:29

grumbling complaining

22:30

we're tired of this manna give us some

22:31

meat now

22:34

and they came to the test at Amana and

22:36

longed instead for the rich foods of

22:39

Egypt the garlic's and all the good

22:42

seasonings and all the you know they

22:44

started romanticizing they didn't

22:46

remember the slavery they remember the

22:47

good food and all the great things

22:49

that's exactly what we do we have a bad

22:51

marriage our husband leaves us and we

22:52

still roll he was such a good guy we

22:54

don't forget that he beat us every day

22:55

and this is why you know he left the

22:57

city in the first place so they came to

23:00

the test Amana and long instead for the

23:02

rich foods of Egypt but God continued to

23:04

give the Israelites a steady supply of

23:06

manna during their 40 years of desert

23:09

wanderings when Joshua and the children

23:12

of Israel crossed the Jordan River and

23:14

entered the promised land at Gilgal they

23:16

celebrated the Passover and ate the

23:18

produce of the land on that day the

23:21

manna seized again illustrating its

23:24

miraculous provision so I'm you know I'd

23:27

take a little time because manna is such

23:29

an essential piece of this whole thing

23:31

so we see this the manna was temporary

23:35

while the Asura is rights were in the

23:37

desert there was a humble provision of

23:40

God's mercy in order to sustain the

23:43

Israelites during their time in the

23:45

desert while they waited for the true

23:48

and the permanent provision of God

23:53

central to this meditation is this idea

23:55

of substitutes temporary imperfect

23:59

substitutes while we await the real and

24:03

the true there are many ways in which

24:06

the church now even after Jesus coming

24:11

into the earth and this more perfect

24:13

sacrifice that he provided but there is

24:15

still a way in which the Church of Jesus

24:16

Christ in this historical time and for

24:19

the past 2,000 years has existed I think

24:21

in a way like eating manna in the desert

24:24

and I think that there is a more

24:26

glorious manifestation of the church

24:29

that is still to be revealed by God

24:32

before Jesus Christ comes into the earth

24:33

and so I'm drawing a parallel here God

24:38

provides some temporary expressions of

24:41

His grace while he reserves the time the

24:47

appointed time to

24:48

that today for the church to enter into

24:51

a state of greater power greater

24:53

maturity greater glory and so this is

24:57

where they draw that that parallel God

25:02

also provided other or other temporary

25:04

modes of provision or guidance through

25:07

the pillar of fire for example through

25:09

the cloud that guided them during the

25:11

day and during the night they had a

25:13

constant GPS and I told them when to

25:16

stay at a certain place and then when to

25:18

get up and continue walking he also

25:21

ensured that the Israelites shoes and

25:23

clothing would not deteriorate during a

25:25

time in the desert you know that right

25:27

God said to them you know your shoes

25:29

never broke down in 40 years can you

25:32

imagine that the Bible says of the women

25:34

were complaining only the same shoes for

25:37

40 years it's not true that's just added

25:39

by me that's a sexist thing I repent

25:45

before you my sisters do not bother to

25:47

come to me and tell me that it's a

25:49

sexist thing I I accept it right now I

25:51

just couldn't resist the chief joke so I

25:54

gotta get it wherever I can so the shoes

25:58

did not tear wear down their clothes

26:01

imagine wearing the same clothes for 40

26:04

years and God says hey be content with

26:07

it yeah you weren't the same khaki pants

26:09

that you wore when you left Egypt but

26:10

that's all you got

26:11

and thank me that it's not you know

26:15

wearing out and you're walking with

26:16

holes and you're behind or something

26:18

like that but they had to wear the same

26:20

the same clothes in the same shoes for

26:22

40 years as well but it was a it was the

26:25

provision of God it was the miraculous

26:27

merciful humble provision of God a

26:32

temporary thing

26:33

while they existed in that humble state

26:39

so when they when they enter the

26:44

promised land this this this food manna

26:50

all of a sudden was stopped when the

26:55

true here's my point when the true when

26:58

the real when the destined when the perm

27:02

and came into effect into manifestation

27:07

that is real food from real land that

27:10

they were destined to inhabit the

27:12

temporary the imperfect seized to be

27:16

necessary and to function clearing the

27:21

way for the more perfect manifestation

27:22

of God's power and presence and I think

27:27

that that's a huge spiritual lesson and

27:30

that God is activating in my spirit this

27:33

time this moment this for the for our

27:36

time it is interesting that the seizing

27:39

of the manna seems to be a sign of

27:41

completion and promotion the end of one

27:46

era and the beginning of another so in

27:51

other words these are humbling elements

27:54

of the desert existence the lack of

27:57

circumcision the supernatural guidance

28:00

from the pillars of cloud and fire would

28:02

simply automatic the God's leading the

28:05

lack of celebration of the Passover once

28:09

all of this is corrected by circumcision

28:12

by the celebration of the Passover by

28:15

the crossing into the land by beginning

28:17

to eat of the food which has been

28:18

destined before them in the land that

28:20

flowed milk and honey once all of these

28:22

Corrections were were affected all these

28:25

things became mere symbols of what they

28:29

had been awaiting and not what they were

28:31

entering into now it was the beginning

28:34

of a mature State for the Israelites and

28:39

for the nation of Israel God was going

28:41

to be dealing with them now in a

28:42

different way as people of God as his

28:46

people as a nation chosen by him to do

28:49

certain tasks in the world this is this

28:53

was what they were meant for it was not

28:55

to live in the desert this was their

28:59

graduation now they were entering into

29:01

the real existence that God had meant

29:04

for them when they left Egypt and

29:07

perhaps even when Abraham started

29:11

roaming the land and God establish a

29:12

covenant with the people to come and

29:14

with the mat without

29:17

nomads that was Abraham so this is it's

29:21

important to emphasize that the seizing

29:25

of the manor was not a demotion but

29:28

rather a promotion into the real and the

29:31

true it was not that God was saying you

29:36

can't enjoy any miraculous provision

29:38

anymore from me because now you must

29:40

enter into the normalcy and get use of

29:42

the more humble existence of eating real

29:43

food by the way I started looking for

29:45

this you know other notes and

29:48

observations in different commentaries

29:51

and so on and it's interesting that the

29:53

commentaries that sort of hold that

29:54

stopped at this moment and try to

29:57

analyze it interestingly enough

29:59

particularly the older ones you know

30:01

they kind of see the seizing of the

30:04

manna as you know God telling them you

30:07

know I'm sort of lowering the level of

30:09

Revelation and now you must simply fend

30:12

for yourselves and eat of the humble

30:14

food of the desert of a rather than of

30:16

the land as opposed to my miraculous

30:18

provision so they see it in usually that

30:21

comes from cessationists by the way who

30:23

feel that the gifts stopped flowing when

30:26

the Bible came into completion and

30:30

there's a whole family of evangelicals

30:34

and Christians who are as call

30:36

cessationist that means that they

30:38

believe that the gifts seized when the

30:41

when the time of the Holy Spirit sort of

30:43

passed and came into a more tame kind of

30:46

expression and when the Bible became the

30:49

normal the normative way of hearing

30:52

God's voice then you don't need the

30:53

supernatural anymore I I reject that I'm

30:57

scandalized by that interpretation I

30:59

think it's not of God in any way and I'm

31:01

sure it's done by very well-meaning

31:03

people I think it has done a tremendous

31:04

amount of harm for people to not then

31:08

the people of God not to want and crave

31:10

the supernatural manifestations of the

31:13

Holy Spirit and we we kind of put people

31:17

asleep with this idea now don't expect

31:20

miracles don't and so you know this kind

31:23

of idea of this kind of way of looking

31:25

at theology and at the Bible you know

31:28

it's very content with this kind of

31:29

thing

31:30

saying hey no longer depend on

31:31

miraculous food provided now just depend

31:34

on you know living out the land and you

31:37

know doing the agricultural thing and so

31:38

on and so forth I think it was the very

31:40

opposite God is telling now you are

31:42

entering into your full maturity now

31:44

you're not children anymore

31:46

depending on just humble substitutes and

31:51

this is why I think brothers and sisters

31:54

if you were here last Sunday I know my

31:56

brother Michael is here this is why I

31:59

think Michaels vision of a young lion

32:02

eating a piece of bloody meat with an

32:05

inscription above saying no more milk

32:07

it's so beautifully appropriate for the

32:11

time we are experiencing

32:12

I remember a beautiful sister who sits

32:14

right there next to Lydia

32:15

where she came to me all kind of

32:18

confused after the service it pastor I

32:21

don't know what that means you know

32:22

bloody because yeah it's a graphic thing

32:24

aligned with a piece of bloody meat

32:26

that's not elegant

32:27

that's not evangelical that's not

32:31

contemporary this bloody meat in the

32:37

fangs of a lion and saying no more milk

32:41

I believe really that it was a

32:43

beautifully prophetic call for our

32:47

church God is telling us congregation

32:51

Lion of Judah and perhaps the entire

32:53

Church of Jesus Christ the time for milk

32:56

is passed the time for mana is passed

33:00

and the time for eating real substantial

33:04

food is at hand that's the punchline of

33:07

this sermon God is saying that the time

33:10

for substitutes for tame monotonous

33:14

substitutes which have done well for you

33:17

for a certain period of time is done

33:19

with and now you must enter into a more

33:22

strength and way of eating and

33:24

sustaining yourselves and I'm going to

33:27

deal with you in a different way you're

33:31

no longer Israelites with reproach on

33:33

your head I think there has been

33:35

reproach on the head of the church all

33:36

these years the church has not existed

33:38

in the way that God wants it to exist we

33:41

live a program the existence

33:44

we live an enslaved existence even

33:48

though we do enjoy the benefits of the

33:51

kingdom you see because the Israelites

33:52

were either eyes they were God's people

33:54

but there was a hold on the entire

33:57

provision of God for them they were in

34:00

the desert because of their disobedience

34:03

they were not prepared for the real

34:06

stuff and so even though they were God's

34:09

people another way they were not God's

34:11

people even though we have been living

34:13

for 2,000 years under the blessings of

34:15

the New Covenant yes and some people

34:16

might have scandalized say oh you know

34:17

Church in slavery well in a sense not

34:20

all not in the sense of we are children

34:22

of God yes but we have not entered into

34:25

the fullness of our inheritance we have

34:27

not entered into the full manifestation

34:31

of God's fatherhood on behalf of the

34:35

church and that is why I yearned for

34:37

that time because I do feel that we are

34:39

we have lived even though we have been

34:41

promoted to another level from from

34:44

Israel but we are still not into the

34:46

fullness of what God has for us we are

34:48

still in a sense eating manna and God

34:51

wants his people there is a time

34:53

reserved listen to me there's a time

34:55

reserved for the people of God for the

34:58

church with a capital C to go from mana

35:01

into real food in the land that God has

35:04

destined for us and I am uttering that

35:07

in a very daring prophetic sort of way I

35:12

love that rawness of Michael's vision

35:15

nothing tender or delicate about that

35:18

vision just like that lion that is in

35:19

front of our main original entrance

35:23

because this is a time where the people

35:25

who got a call to be warlike and to

35:28

enter into a different iteration in that

35:31

same way there's a time coming and they

35:32

may never be nearer than we think

35:34

when God's contemporary or rather God's

35:37

temporary merciful provisions of milk

35:39

will cease because the true way of his

35:41

dealing with this church will have come

35:43

into effect and by the way there are

35:46

passages so for example in chapter 4 the

35:52

well there are two of them let me see

35:54

I'm just trying to find I think it may

35:56

be Colossians

35:57

well you know there's a passage where

35:59

Paul says to the Corinthians think it is

36:01

you know I I I couldn't give you solid

36:04

food to eat and I gave you milk because

36:06

you were not prepared for the greater

36:08

things I don't know that the church is

36:10

prepared yet it's being prepared I don't

36:13

know that our church I believe God may

36:14

be taking us there that's why we need to

36:16

start moving in a more mature way people

36:19

of God

36:19

English ministry Spanish ministry we

36:21

need to start moving we need to leave

36:24

the things of chilled childhood aside

36:27

this this program the you know routine

36:31

like existence and beautiful and pretty

36:34

as it is is not what God has really for

36:38

his people it's a different thing and we

36:40

must strive to enter into that maturity

36:45

so this is not a time for Janette

36:49

generic humble expressions of God's

36:51

power mediated by our dependency on the

36:55

Bible alone but a time of great power

37:00

and glory glory in which the favor the

37:02

authority and the power of God will be

37:06

an extraordinary manifestation and the

37:09

church begins to move with great

37:10

authority and prestige let me clarify

37:13

something the Bible will always be the

37:15

foundational element of our lives every

37:19

experience every manifestation every

37:22

expression of the gift has to be put

37:25

through the funnel of the Bible and and

37:27

eternal truth there is no nothing no

37:31

matter how sublime how spectacular that

37:35

supersedes the Bible everything that we

37:37

experience here or do has to be within

37:40

the framework of the Bible but God also

37:44

actualizes and puts up to date his

37:48

generic word through a Rhema word a

37:50

prophetic word a revelation God speaks

37:54

to his people God speaks to his prophets

37:56

God speaks to his apostles these gifts

38:00

of God are meant to put up to date the

38:02

generic manifestations of the revelation

38:06

in the Bible they're supposed to work in

38:07

tandem with each other in cooperation

38:10

with each other

38:11

God's Word the foundation on top of that

38:13

deposits of prophetic impartation and

38:17

revelation moments where God speaks in a

38:20

particular way for a particular moment

38:21

for a particular war for a particular

38:23

task and these are the gifts that

38:26

complement the eternal general

38:30

manifestations of God am I making sense

38:31

to you I want to make sure that I'm not

38:33

getting too much intoxicated with my own

38:36

rhetoric here the true destination of

38:39

the church is not the partial

38:42

impoverished way of God's supernatural

38:43

power manifesting itself as it has until

38:46

now but rather a state in which a church

38:49

can find its true dignity and move in

38:52

all the power and the glory of God this

38:55

is what we must crave and this is what

38:57

we must aim for and this is what we must

38:59

strive for and I believe that if we are

39:01

moving as I believe in the favor of God

39:04

now God is saying go for it I will

39:07

release it as you strive and you you

39:09

clamor for it this is our true

39:12

destination this is our true entering

39:14

into the land that flows milk and honey

39:16

where mana is no longer necessary

39:18

because we are finally eating the

39:21

glorious mature and wholesome food that

39:24

God lays in front of us at our table as

39:26

we enter into the Promised Land for this

39:31

is the true and I'm reading here just to

39:33

finish here for this is the true

39:36

intended state of God's church as a

39:40

whole one in which the gifts of the

39:43

Spirit are in full manifestation in

39:46

which communion and intimacy with God is

39:50

the stuff of daily life in which

39:53

authority is given to God's people in

39:56

which the shame of Egypt that is of

39:59

slavery is taken away from the church

40:02

and it is restored to its intended glory

40:06

I really believe that we must start

40:09

praying Lord take away the film I often

40:13

feel that there's like a veneer a

40:16

transparent veneer that covers the

40:20

manifestations of God's pure revelation

40:23

it is like when you

40:25

when you buy a TV and it may have like a

40:27

strip of plastic totally adhesive

40:31

plastic on it now you try to watch TV

40:33

with that adhesive plastic yes you can

40:35

see it you can see the images you can

40:37

see but then one day you say wait a

40:38

minute what is this I can't you know

40:40

this is a little fuzzy here oh there's

40:42

some plastic on it you take it and you

40:44

go you peel it away and now you see it

40:48

clearly well I believe that the church

40:51

in its present existence has a piece of

40:54

adhesive covering on God's

40:56

manifestations and expressions we we

41:00

enjoy to a certain level these imperfect

41:03

miracles these expressions of God's

41:07

power that we're used to in this

41:10

dispensation but there's a moment I

41:12

believe when God will take the adhesive

41:14

off his revelations and his

41:16

manifestations and we will see with high

41:18

definition with great clarity this is

41:21

what we should look for this is what we

41:23

should strive for this is what we should

41:25

be willing to pay the price for because

41:27

there's a lot of cleanly cleaning up

41:29

that God needs to do but we're willing

41:31

to are we willing to do that are we

41:33

willing to pay the price we willing to

41:36

say God scraped my innards with your

41:41

holy I don't know what it is sandpaper

41:43

that doesn't sound too elegant you find

41:46

scrape it away because I want I want

41:48

nothing to interfere with the

41:50

connectivity between you and I the

41:52

church in us and God and so we have you

41:59

know to a certain degree mankind we we

42:01

enjoy God's provisional provision you

42:07

know we have doctors who do certain

42:09

things we have what the ordinance called

42:12

I think was generic grace or general

42:13

grace Oh God yes but God wants his

42:16

people to live in a different level of

42:20

miracle-working power and I'm not

42:24

content with the consolation price I

42:26

want that I want the grand prize I want

42:29

the real thing that's why I'm travailing

42:31

I've been travailing for decades in my

42:33

life because I believe that there is

42:34

that we cannot call for that there's

42:37

greater glory

42:38

there's greater power God doesn't want

42:41

us to just live in metaphor he wants us

42:43

to live in the reality of his

42:45

supernatural manifestation I believe

42:47

that all the supernatural manifestations

42:49

and blesses of God that the church has

42:50

experienced I'm reading it here now and

42:51

expressing the world until now have been

42:53

nothing but mana the merciful but humble

42:57

provision of God while we await the true

43:00

more real manifestations of his glory

43:02

and his favor on behalf of his church if

43:07

my prophetic discernment proves correct

43:10

a time is coming when the miracles we

43:13

have experienced until now will seem

43:16

like humble mana compared to the more

43:20

powerful undeniable manifestations of

43:24

God's power that will begin to be

43:27

expressed mm-hmm is that too lengthy

43:31

there will come a time when we will see

43:35

God's power manifested so clearly in the

43:37

life of the church who will realize man

43:39

what we thought was a combination was

43:41

just initiation it was just the

43:42

beginning it was just a temporary thing

43:45

there comes a time when the church will

43:47

be able to enter into a period of rest

43:50

I'm gonna use that word very

43:52

deliberately into a period of rest where

43:58

we will no longer have to grope in the

44:00

darkness with the humble aids that God

44:04

provides but we will see clearly and

44:08

experience great proximity to the

44:11

presence of God Hebrews chapter 4 thank

44:16

you

44:16

verse 9 the Lord you know he's been just

44:22

keeping me occupied this whole time

44:24

because you know the Bible is full of

44:26

these ideas of temporary things that are

44:29

put there to await the real permanent

44:32

things when Jesus dies on the cross the

44:37

moment that he dies as I said that that

44:38

the veil of the temple was rent it was

44:40

it was torn in half vertically because

44:43

God is a very symbolic precise God what

44:46

was being said was hey this veil is no

44:49

longer necessary

44:51

it was fine for a time but now that my

44:55

son has carried out the ultimate

44:57

reconciling sacrifice you can come into

45:00

my throne freely confidently and that's

45:03

what the Bible says come into the throne

45:05

of God with great confidence the throne

45:08

of grace and so God said hey that veil

45:12

no longer necessary

45:13

take it away that temple where

45:16

sacrifices are being given as if my son

45:18

had not died have it destroyed because

45:21

now there is a permanent sacrifice the

45:23

blood shed by my son on the cross it's

45:26

no need to sacrifice any more animals

45:28

and since that temple is being

45:30

maintained in rebellious nests I'm gonna

45:31

raise it to the ground not a stone shall

45:34

be left on it because the true has come

45:36

into clay and on and on and on you see

45:40

all these expressions that when the true

45:42

comes into play the temporary the

45:45

provisional falls to the side replaced

45:50

by the the more permanent that God has

45:56

the true Hebrews chapter 4 verse 9 says

46:00

there remains then a Sabbath rest for

46:03

the people of God there remains then a

46:07

Sabbath rest for the people of God now I

46:09

know that this passage is part of a

46:12

whole rabbinic exposition that the

46:15

writer is carrying out here about other

46:17

things pertaining to the new

46:22

dispensation of Jesus Christ as one but

46:23

I think that there's an application in

46:24

the light of what I'm saying here about

46:27

a rest there remains then a Sabbath rest

46:31

for the people of God for anyone who

46:33

enters God's rest also rests from his

46:36

own work just as God did from his that

46:41

was therefore make every effort to enter

46:44

that rest so that no one will fall by

46:48

following their example of disobedience

46:52

I want to remit you I want to sort of

46:56

assure you

46:58

into that search for the rest of God you

47:02

know there's a rest that my soul has not

47:04

experienced yet there is a restlessness

47:07

in me that keeps me in continual

47:15

vigilance because something in me says

47:20

don't rest yet you you have not come to

47:25

into the promised land of my

47:28

relationship totally yet but I think

47:32

there's a time coming for that rest that

47:35

Sabbath existence where the church will

47:38

move with less travailing less suffering

47:43

less you know the stick you leading for

47:47

God do something and there's a time when

47:50

we will simply speak out the presence of

47:51

God it would be there there's a time

47:56

when we will declare deliverance and it

47:58

will happen there's a time and will

47:59

declare healing and it will happen the

48:03

time for just a physical agony of the

48:07

church and everything takes so much time

48:09

so much effort the gravity weight in

48:14

which we move is too heavy

48:16

God wants to lighten the load of his

48:18

people by a visitation of a spirit and

48:23

and enter us into that promised land of

48:26

rest for him that's what I am hoping for

48:29

that's what I'm clamoring to the Lord

48:31

for Lord let us enter into that we have

48:34

waited such a long time and you have

48:37

given us provisional

48:39

helps you've been good to us manna was

48:45

food from heaven

48:46

I'm sure the nutrients in manna could

48:49

not be compared to anything that any

48:52

human food could provide and yet it was

48:55

it was a humble thing it was a temporary

48:58

thing it was a monotonous thing God has

49:01

diversity for us God has creativity for

49:04

us God has great great jewels of all

49:08

kinds of colors and configurations for

49:10

us to enjoy great meals of his presence

49:14

and that is what we need to ask the Lord

49:16

for and this is what we need to pay the

49:19

price for in your life you need to you

49:21

need to seek more you know we were too

49:25

comfortable American evangelicalism and

49:29

if even in other ways other parts of the

49:31

world as well even the Africans and the

49:33

Latin Americans you know we're far from

49:36

where God wants or needs us it's too

49:39

much carnality too much complacency too

49:44

much tameness we need to be clamoring to

49:48

the Lord we want more Lord we're

49:49

desperate desperate for your glory and

49:52

for your presence we must be calling out

49:55

then the Lord will give us rest this is

49:57

the time God's people for sanctifying

49:59

ourselves it is time for preparing for

50:02

the bride that to prepare itself for the

50:04

groom will come and visit her at night

50:06

and make love to her which has got to be

50:10

prepared we got to be prepared you have

50:13

to be ready for that people of God

50:15

prepare let's celebrate a holy Passover

50:20

let's circumcise ourselves so God can do

50:23

his work in our lives we're not we

50:26

haven't entered the promised land yet

50:28

we're on our way very much so and got me

50:30

one is there even sooner than we think

50:32

for that last manifestation of the glory

50:35

of the church before Jesus then comes so

50:40

pray with me

50:40

and would you stand if you are able take

50:46

a 30 seconds to cry out to the Lord this

50:49

morning

50:49

I really thought what I'm saying is in

50:51

the spirit that this is what God wants

50:53

for us and let's cry out to the Lord

51:00

father this word Lord I will walk in

51:04

that word I will found my yearnings and

51:10

actions on these words and I pray for

51:15

the release of your power I pray for

51:20

that semi-transparent veneer to be taken

51:25

away from our sight in from our spirit

51:29

that we might enter into an unmediated

51:33

direct connection with the power of your

51:38

Holy Spirit and to the degree that you

51:41

may have some tasks for us to complete

51:43

for that to happen father we say yes and

51:45

amen just show us the way Examiners Oh

51:49

Lord and see if there is anything in us

51:52

that is not conducive so that glory that

51:58

you want to express in us we repent of

52:01

anything Lord that is an obstacle to

52:04

that glory and we say Come Spirit of God

52:07

come presence of God come manifestation

52:11

of the power of God we want to enter

52:13

into your rest and I thank you thank you

52:16

Lord the time for manna is past the time

52:20

to eat wholesome real permanent food is

52:24

here and we welcome it we release it

52:27

Lord we opened the gates for that

52:30

expression of your power

52:33

to come into manifestation and we thank

52:36

you for it let us be ready
