Mark Mueller : December 2003 - Hands of Mercy Physical Therapy in Honduras

I arrived in Honduras on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003. The following Sunday the church gave me a warm welcome and reception. All is well with me and I feel at home in my new church.

I want to give you a summary of why I am here and an update of what is happening. I am a pediatric physical therapist. I am serving with the Amor Viviente (Living Love) church. We want to start a ministry for handicapped children. Although the need is great, there is no therapy for children in this part of Honduras. Our vision is to raise up a rehab center for children where I will train people in therapy.

I am working with the pastor’s wife, Suyapa Montoya. Suyapa and Pastor Carlos have a great heart for children. The church has an orphanage for children called Casa Feliz (Happy Home) where Suyapa is the director. There are 19 children in Casa Feliz. The majority were abandoned street kids.

Suyapa and Pastor Carlos have worked hard to raise up this ministry. They also adopted David, a child with cerebral palsy. David is 6 years old and has needed multiple medical interventions and physical therapy. Due to her experience, Suyapa is an excellent person for me to work with. She has a burden for children and knows first hand the needs of handicapped children. It is a blessing and privilege to work with her.

This project has different phases. We are currently in the organization and planning phase. It has been difficult to begin since we are in the rainy season. It rained heavily for 3 weeks, which delayed us from meeting. Now Suyapa and I have had adequate time to form a plan. She is going to be in charge of the administration and personnel of the center.

I will be responsible for staff training and the evaluation of and therapy and equipment for the children. We want to have a group of assistant therapists. During December and January I will be developing a training program, creating forms (for paperwork), and identifying needed equipment. We want to begin phase II in February, which is staff training. There is much more and I will give you more details as we progress.

During my time here, I have been helping a few children in Casa Feliz and some adults who need therapy. I will continue this while we plan and organize. I am also going to help at a special education school in January when the students return from their winter vacation.

Prayer needs:

For direction and guidance in the process of raising up the center. That the Lord would help me develop an excellent training program.
